SHOUT OUT LOUD!

Soon we will be facing the elections. More probably than not, the Mumbai terror attacks will not be a real issue on the election agenda. After all, the thinking Mumbai lot is too little to be a votebank. Who is going to care about us?

Get into politics people say. Because politics need good people like you and me. Unless we get into politics, how do we know whether we are good or not is the question. Secondly, who is going to fund our campaign? Thirdly, will we be able to handle the hooliganism and threats to our lives and families? In an Utopia, I would have easily entered politics, but then again, I wouldn’t have needed to coz it is Utopia.

The public is feeling very potent after having ‘made’ a few ministers to resign. Foolish that it is, the public doesn’t understand or maybe chooses to ignore the fact that such resignations are futile as well as attempts to divert attention and release a little steam from the boiler.

Poor RR Patil, because of not being street smart, lost his position in the Vidhan Sabha. He might have said the wrong thing at the wrong time, but he is not a wrong man. He is one of the best politicians available in the country. He doesn’t even have a flat in Mumbai after being a Deputy CM for 4 ½ years, his kids still attend school in his small village Anjane and he has applied for a place in Mumbai by filling the necessary forms. These and other things show that he is a clean man at heart. God knows we need such ‘good’ people in politics. But, we I guess, prefer just those with a gift of gab.

We are already back to watching Breaking News, surfing for especially those involving Bengali baba predictions, half naked women and silly politicians making sillier allegations and even sillier competitors. The news media definitely needs to be brought to book. For heaven’s sake guys, you are telecasting news which is for information, not entertainment. Not even infotainment. Please.I wanted to say this out loud too, on TV, in newspapers and on the radio. The media guys did not really like my idea.

We need to do ‘something,’ is the feeling in the common man’s mind and the common woman’s bosom. There are simple things we can do to take care to see that such things don’t happen. We can let security agencies ‘hassle’ us by checking our baggage at malls, restaurants, airports and railway stations. We can ask for a fellow passenger/ shoppers identification or notify police of anything suspicious. Not too many people are excited about either of these things. But we need to do ‘something.’ Definitely.

But there are more ‘exciting’ things to do. Where do such terrorist outfits get funding from? The answers have been out there for decades. The money they use is drug money, petro-dollars, films and construction. Will we stop watching films though? Will we stop taking drugs? Will the Goa government really crack down on drugs in the state and lose their tourism revenue? Will we switch off all our appliances when we do not need them so that less oil is used in producing electricity? Maybe we will. Most probably, it just sounds good to hear that there are so many things we can do. Will we? Let’s not ask and let’s not get disappointed.

But there is a lot of hope you see. Maybe, one day, a dictator will rise amongst us. Or maybe a comet will crash into the earth and annihilate us before we manage that on our own.

SHOUT OUT LOUD!

DISCLAIMER: This article goes all over the place. That is because all our problems are all over the place.

''When the whole world sleeps, India shall awaken…'' said our first Prime Minister, 61 years ago on a day when everything in the future seemed bright as the morning star. Today, we are waiting for the world to sleep so that we can then awaken and fulfill the prophecy. Going by the situation in the country, and not just of the terror attacks, this is how it at the least, seems.

A careless child will hurt itself at home and outside. What hurts the child is not its environment, but it’s attitude of not being careful with the environment. Terrorists have existed in all the history of humanity. There have always been those with an unhealthy ambition of power who have even relished the thought of sitting on a throne made of corpses. So decrying the terrorists who attacked us as unhuman is a very certain denial of our understanding of human nature. It was our unpreparedness and hence carelessness, that led to the carnage we experienced. There are dogs that bite. Simply carrying a stick in hand serves to keep the dogs from doing it.

What kept us from having a stick in hand? It is not as if we were totally caught by surprise. We had had the 1993 bomb blasts. Leave that, we had the most recent train blast in the city. Why were we not patrolling our seas and why wasn’t the policing in the city effective enough to catch these mischief-makers before they really got a chance to do their act?

The answers for these questions are less retail in nature than we might think. It has more to do with our attitudes and our upbringing than what we actually did or did not do. Let us start with our upbringing. In a society where taking risks is tantamount to blasphemy, who is going to think out of the box for anything? This attitude is highly strengthened in school where you are rewarded for being a sheep and not yourself. It does not matter whether you know what is going on in the current political, economic or social scenario in school. What matters is whether you know the seven states in the country where bauxite is found in plenty. Try asking the teacher what bauxite is used for. She will spank you on your butt for asking stupid questions and wasting precious time in which she has to finish her syllabus. Of course, all teachers are not like this, but the majority is.

In such a way, we in India waste 15 years of our lives acquiring stupid, flaccid and impotent information. Then suddenly, we are asked about what we want to do in life. Going by the conditioning of school where you were rewarded for marks, we try and find an equivalent of it in adult society. And we find money. Where in school people patted your back if you got good marks, here we are patted on our backs if we earn good money. Why do we need marks or money? That is not a question to ask, please. It is hardly surprising then that we have not only wide spread corruption, but also ‘educated’ people indulging in things like bombings as was evident in the train blasts that took place where an IT professional masterminded the whole thing.

This is the major problem of India. There might be a lot of youth in the country, but the country has wasted crucial years of their life giving information for which school is not required. Schools should be for creating good citizens, not giving information.

Such a beginning to our lives creates highly monotonous individuals who have no ambition in terms of their karma. All their ambition is about the phal. Work well done scarcely is motivation then. All that matters is the paycheck at the end of the day, without thinking of long-term consequences. Because we have never been talked to in terms of long-term consequences. Why would then anybody, think beyond the bottomline, whether they be politicians, bureaucrats, or even ‘professionals’ as we like to call ourselves. No wonder we got the economic recession on ourselves. The long term effects were never thought of. Or were thought of and then consciously ignored. No wonder then that we are facing famines and floods because of global warming. The entire picture is not being thought of. Why? Because in schools we are not trained to think about anything but our marks. Hence, we grow up to ignore anything but what will get us pats on our backs., whether it be money or political or religious power.

This attitude reflects in the intentions of the terrorists too when they think of the many comforts and luxuries they will receive in heaven because of what they did for the religion. This attitude also reflects in the other types of terrorists like the ‘rebels’ of African countries. I want what I want. To hell with whatever happens because of it.

Just look around yourself and you will notice that so much work needs to be done. The environment is simply dying. Any hope for it is unrealistic optimism. The infrastructure of our country is pathetic. In Mumbai, the local trains are not being paid attention to because the car and petrol lobbies do not see it as profitable for themselves. The roads are what the British made. We are still using them. The stations have not been upgraded from since then. Water and electricity is in a mess. Slums are rampant. There is no even a pretense of security. ‘Development’ is so haphazard, it better not happen. Leave Shanghai, make Mumbai Bombay and that would be a big achievement. The British built the city of Bombay. We just renamed it to Mumbai without contributing an iota.

With so many problems, asking for suggestions just for security and to tackle terror are like giving a painkiller to a man trapped under a fallen building. GET THE MAN OUT OF THE RUBBLE FOR HEAVEN”S SAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SHOUT OUT LOUD!

How long does it take an aggravated nation to get over a barbarous terror attack on its financial capital?

If I were to elucidate on this, I would find myself dafter.

This is only because, the idea of forgiveness and tolerance has been imbibed in our blood from pre-independent British-ruled-India phase.

Even so, the father of the nation was a propagator of the ‘non-violent’ movement.

Doesn’t that ring a bell?

Without a doubt, we, the people of India have learned over the years to get along with our mammoth family of problems.

You agree with me on this don’t you?

After all,

We are good human beings; we can’t be like the ill-fated terrorist, even if we tried, we couldn’t come close.

Yes! It’s true, that we are angry now.

But,

Certainly not angry enough, to pack our bags, and head to Pakistan for a terror orgy.

We might gather together, shout livid slogans, criticise the system and even behave cynical at a few occasions. But, that’s it for us. After that, we have to get home, to our homemade food.

I hope all this is not coming as a surprise to you. Because, if it is, then don’t just sit there.

Join the 2611 movement.

We must let the world know, we can only be pushed so far.

You don’t seem to be moving a muscle. Is something wrong?

Amidst all this fury, my displeasure towards the with-time-out-of-mind thought process is gaining momentum. Farcical incisive terror is entrenched in my cerebral cortex, where a certain burlesque will take place.

Seems like, we are all a bunch of hare-brained nitwits vying for space, on this, already claustrophobic planet.

How can I forget about the ‘SPIRIT’ of our countrymen? Well, to be precise, the reason why I’m annoyed. Its that if-I’m-ok-needn’t-bother attitude which uproots the very ground we stand upon. Rather, everyone seems to be out and plying there regular routine.

Apparently, they don’t have much of a choice as well. Moreover, the common man –middle class- is riddled with a false sense of security.

In conclusion,

Life will go on, and if terror doesn’t come knocking on our door, you and me will get old and cease. Don’t worry, no one will notice.

SHOUT OUT LOUD!

On the 3rd of December, exactly after a week of the horrendous attacks that rocked Mumbai and the entire country, we decided to voice our opinion on what had happened. The comics you see below were made into huge banners that we took and stood at the places where the terror attacks had effected the highest damage - the Gateway of India and Marine Drive.

It was very heartening to receive extremely positive responses from the people for two things -
one that they really appreciated the youth, that is us, doing something so differently and two that they needed not only to vent out but to actually demand action from those responsible.

Which is what the peace rally at the Gateway in the evening was meant for. You will hear much more from us on this initiative we are calling The 2611 Opinion. To be a part of this, just mail your suggestions and articles or poems to haveursay@rocketmail.com. As citizens of the largest democracy in the world, it is our duty not only to voice our opinions but also to demand and effect change. Jai Hind.

SHOUT OUT LOUD!

On November 26th, 2008 a bunch of very clever psychotic monsters decided to burn down a city. They decided to make a whole country squeal while they watched and laughed. They decided to show a government it's true worth. They did it and they did it well. And they made sure to put up a good show.

The cries would be too brief to savor. So they stretched the span of the attack...so that minute after minute, hour after hour, each squeak, each cry of horror could be relished.

Like vampires and slayers that until now only lived in our imaginations, they killed and slayed for fifty nine hours. What went on in their minds, what level of hatred drove them and kept them going, what substance kept them infuriated, what power they must've felt through the hours; are things we can only wonder.

The bottomline is, they walked into our territory like kings, slapped us on our faces, snatched away our weapons from us, murdered our people in cold blood, and then became martyrs for their jihad, which they were all along prepared for.

What's left of the tragedy is over a thousand mourning families, a widespread wave of frustration, chaos all over the country, and people like you and me, protesting at public rallies, giving opinions and reading those of others.

They succeeded. And we failed.

With a population as large as ours, it's impossible to keep a check on everyone's movements. The attack was so meticulously planned, it perhaps couldn't be avoided. A lot of people can be blamed - politicians, armed forces, coastguards, the police, media...the list is endless.

But the truth is, after the attack, what needed to be done wasn't done.

The elongated operation was a display of the absolute inefficiency of our entire system to deal with an extreme situation like this one. From where I see it, the biggest drawback of the operation was letting the media get so intricately involved. When the presence of clear communication amongst the terrorists from their various stations became apparent, the first thing that should've been done was to keep the media from giving minute to minute news of the operation. There was no concept of secrecy in the rescue plan. The terrorists inside were constantly getting informed about everything happening on the outside.

We can go on and on about what "should've been done". But that doesn't get us anywhere, nor does it undo what's been done.

Mr. Manmohan Singh's speech after the disaster was something we could've all done without. Despite all that George Bush did, he was atleast sensitive enough to console his countrymen appropriately when they were made victims of terror.

Mr. R.R. Patil's resignation appears to be the case of a common person screwing up a job at work and then quitting with the fear of facing the consequences. A classic example of escaping responsibility. Basically, he CHICKENED OUT!

Let's not even begin to talk about Mr. Thakrey.

At the end of the day, the common man comes out of his house again. People call it the spirit of Mumbai. But it's not the spirit; common people like you and me get out of the house again because we don't have an option. We are back on the roads again, using trains and buses again, any of which could explode any moment. But we do it only because we are compelled to do it. The common man is compelled by the need to earn his bread.

Any kind of damage control cannot repair what's been broken. If the country doesn't wake up now, it probably never will.

SHOUT OUT LOUD!

Seems like everyone and anyone - with a desktop - is talking about it. Everyone is irked and disgruntled with the sad turn of events. Why shouldn’t they be? After all, they’ve been hit, where it hurts the most. Their pockets - that is.

All this while, terror as well as terrorists seemed to be something that belonged to the lower strata of life. Only the poor feared them and the rest lived their lives as they pleased.

I guess, unlike the western part of the world, where the approach is plan and do. We in India still continue with a far unique and rudimentary – now that it’s done, let’s plan – approach.

How did the world not learn that terrorist have finally gotten their acts together and started doing worthy work, for their cause? They seemed to have gotten it right with The Twin Towers in New York and even the violent London bombings; creating terror and hitting the dictators under their belts – financial belts.

Some did roll-up their sleeves and laid out a pyramid like plan - on a huge white board - in their pentagon looking structures. Did everyone learn from the mistakes of the leaders? Well, certainly – NO. Why should we care about what those western folks are doing? We are safe here; the only threats out here are, making the rush hour or finding the right man to bribe – to get the job done, leaving the terror attacks to a lower and more helpless class.

Leaving out what happened during the days of terror in Mumbai, which would only make it rhetoric, we will shine upon the angst and sardonic threat awaiting. But, before that, let’s understand a bigger picture.

A few palpable observations, which were reminiscent of the attacks on the west, are as follows:

a. The head-to-toe approach of the terrorists. By this, with a certain amount of vexation, I would like to point towards the loop-holes in our system and how they – the terrorists - used this, to their advantage.

b. How every channel – television - prays on the fragility of human emotions, for the sake of information or rather caustic financial gains.

c. The audacity of the entire episode.

d. Finally, how we chose to tackle this menace – our fight.

The Head-To-Toe Approach

From the information that has come to my notice, I see a certain intellect and confidence amongst the planners of this modus-operandi. They must have been sitting in their caves and said to each other, ‘why are we killing the poor and wasting our efforts. Let’s hit the decision-making set.’

Let’s train young bloods, with educational backgrounds, fluent in English. This way, no one will know, what hit them. Training from ex ISI and other LET agents as well as pre-attack local study, make this assault not only well planned but also logistically perfect.

Right from the boys, who had been in the city, for the past few months, quietly scrutinizing every nook and corner of south Mumbai to the men with the mastermind – bigger picture – of global terrorism, no leaf, was left unturned.

Television

Without a doubt, this terror attack has seen an incessant coverage, from Nariman house, Trident and The Taj Palace. It is the duty of media to provide the public with information but what eventually aired live was not only disgusting but downright infuriating.

Every channel, as a social responsibility, could have conveyed the entire – terror struck – episode, as humane as possible. If this had been the driving force, our news wouldn’t have seemed like clips from a Bollywood movie.

Nevertheless, a few channels did manage to pull off a rather sympathetic and emotional episode, which was needed. But, if I had seen this as one big picture, it seemed to be more about TRPs, rather then NEWS.

Audacity

Like me, many were an audience to the rage of high-society and elite, spanning across media. In one particular incident, which caught my eye was, when this influential socialite came in-front of the camera and vented her angst. She talked about ‘audacity’ and a whole bunch of irk – baloney, I say.

When all these terror attacks have happened in the vying eye of the same people, in vicinity of same borders, but in different locations, on different class of people, then… No one seems to be talking about ‘audacity’.

The one thing I would like to understand is, by audacity are we suggesting that high class have been terrorized or because it was south Mumbai’s prime locales, which have made it an ‘audacity’ label.

If the above statement is true, then, we are also suggesting the fact that, any terror attack on our soil which doesn’t hit the rich lacks ‘audacity’.

Our Fight

As the mighty Indian force - to fight terror - descended upon the shores of Mumbai, from the NORTH (I hope all Marathi’s are listening), we saw a sign of hope. Since, the Marathi’s have shown their true strengths, I feel discussing them further would only waste time.

Now, this fight can be debated on several, logical and illogical means. A few believe that the NSG should have taken control over the situation. Others believe otherwise.

Despite our forces fighting a politically-corrected battle, managing to crack the terror plot, didn’t take one phone-call. The death toll, which seems under-stated, could have been averted only if the process had been dictator-leadership followed. But, this would only be one-more-opinion.

In conclusion, the bigger fight, in the bigger picture, is the main cause of worry, for our future. If this wasn’t a good enough lesson, I’m sure nothing will be.

The people in dhotis must put aside their petty politics and roll-up their sleeves; it’s time to draw a pyramid on a huge white board.

Now what?

Like the most of us, who have been irked and infuriated by the terror attacks, blaming someone else seems to be the only relief. The corrupt officials are responsible, the system is lucid, and it’s his fault and so on.

I guess, it’s but natural for us to put the blame on someone else, when at the end, we all are collectively responsible.

Paying traffic officials to lay us off on jumping a signal or over speeding, having our CA file excessive receipts to avoid taxes and the list goes on. If we are the ones fueling the corruption blaze, then, only we can put an end to it as well.

We all have to start from ourselves. To propagate a better country, we all must unite and take the right steps forward.

Evading tax, paying bribes would be out the door and taking collective decisions in.

Right down from having all the well educated vote and question the system for its accountability; we can make the change.

So let’s start doing, rather than, just nodding.

SHOUT OUT LOUD!

Fear

This word plays an important role in our life.

We human being must have gone through evolution of our body structure, mind and a part of our habits.

But the fear is still the same, it keeps on changing its role.

Fear takes over an individual's thinking. He is left numb when it strikes you.

Even in today's world we have fear of losing our purse, job, etc.

Some days before this fear has taken a role of human beings and started killing

But we common people cudn't do anything but just sitting on a couch staring at the idiot box.

We are also becoming greedy due to this fear, cuz we think that more we have less we will be afraid off.

I remember something from my past i had a fear that i will drown in the water.

my father knew that if he didnt take over his fear he cudnt overcome that feeling.

so one day in the mornin, we went to swimming pool and i was standing at the same distance.

Next minute i was struggling to breathe hitting my hands in the water to keep my body above the water, stroking my legs to keep myself up...

After sumtym i had a helping hand from my father.

Later from that day i was ready to face fear and show that fear it never easy to overcome one's thinking or thought to survive and survive without fear...

We have to understand now is the time to face it, now is the time to say no to thing which u feel is not correct. It will be hard for sumtym but later, you wont be sorry that you havent tried. But can stand, with more people coming with u for the movement which have moulded from air into a storm.

Take a stand and i dont know how to change it but i just know there is a blow in my head to do something for the fellow being. I think to feel is important, and by tym it will start.

Simple things that could change us:

1. We should try and keep on telling goverment by different sources to finance our security personels with all the latest upgrades

2. Repel: Even if we see anything going wrong by footpath or anywhere, just repel or call local police.

3. More security measures should be taken, i.e. cctv, satellite camera's, extra should be added in the baggage.

4. General public should be given more and more notice to keep themselves updated.

This is the time when we can stand in or stand out...

What Measures Have WE Taken? - Omkar Gogate, Thane

SHOUT OUT LOUD!

Enough have we all talked about inefficiency of the politicians and the system, haven't we? Yes, including me. I believe it is also the time we meditated and looked within. Look at our selves in the huge mirror of facts and ask our selves "What Measures Have We All Taken?"

Agreed, this attack was unique and was of a more sever manner, but terrorist attacks have shaken the city even before, starting from 1993 blasts to date. Every time we all vowed to be more vigilant and careful. What happened? Can we admit the vigilance didn't even last for a week. Worse still we have learnt to relax once such events actually happen, convincing our selves that, such thing is not gonna happen any sooner now. What vigilance and what alert?

Did you run through the news papers? A real life demo of hopelessness and carelessness was presented by the On-Their-Toes Railway Police, thanks to Mr. Borkar from Dombivali. This man carried his revolver, which was baqaayda licensed, to CST station, then passed through all of the 'SECURITY' detectors, and guess what? He just wasn't caught, how amazing isn't it! Mr. Borkar then presented the revolver to the police, asking how they could let him pass through all the TIGHT security. The answer was "humko beep ki awaze sunayee nahi padi", wow- felt a bit more secured? "Hum sabko rail police pe bahut naaz hona chahiye!"

From the horses mouth (read Gadhon ke muh se! in Hindi), how we ourselves should take care of our own. The next railway announcement must be "Pease take care of your own valuables and life, railways bear no responsibility of it whatsoever"

Then there were those who have not missed this golden opportunity to cash in the publicity, by readily available means. No marks for guessing, wahi purana Yagya Yaag, what else. Our media has fondly covered all these mean and selfish acts of self exposure on their respective channel. People gathered on various places to and ARRANGED Yagyas. Offered litres after litres of precious ghee and grains and milk.

IT IS FOOD TO MILLIONS you morons.

They returned home only after they finally spotted themselves on a channel, seeing how they looked and how was their make up.

I can not conclude without thanking the brave staff of the two hotels. They have been poured praises from all those who were caught in those places. They tried relentlessly to comfort their dear clients through the horrible nightmare that wrecked on them. 'Hats off to all of you, survived and sacrificed.'

Our commandos were awesome. They dealt with entire matter with such delicate manner; American soldiers please learn from them what it means by rescuing the common people from terrorists.

It took this long for us to realise… - Ashima Gupta, Mumbai

SHOUT OUT LOUD!

11/26, Wednesday — A day that started as usual for the city — packed trains, traffic jams and the grind of the city life. But there was something in store, something none of us could imagine, a nightmare to unfold, a terror to strike, a city to be under siege of a few men who have no religion, no humanity. The only religion they understand is of terrorism, the only language they speak is that of the guns and the only thing they celebrate is over dead bodies of innocent.

Mumbai a city of dreams, a city of lights, a city of hope. It’s a city that never sleeps, a city whose roads are paved with gold, a city where one could take a taxi at 4 am and reach home safely. But the night of November 26, 2008 changed it all. It made me question myself as did all the previous blasts and attacks. The magnitude was more than anyone could imagine. We had become numb to the regular bomb blasts, they had almost become a part of our lives, but this, I cannot not imagine it as a part of my life. This was something one heard that happened in Kashmir. Something we sympathized with but never realized the intensity of the fear they faced. For the first time that day and the days that followed, made me realize what the Kashmiris went through. The fear they lived in and their struggle to survive, their desire to have a normal and happy life.

For the first time I realized what a terror attack felt like. Right here in my city. It makes me wonder was this city sleeping through all the planning to terrorize the city, when we believe that this city never sleeps? The roads are paved with dead bodies of the innocent and the blood of the injured? The question that hit me the hardest — WILL I FEEL SAFE ANYMORE?

All of us are only talking, I guess its time we do something. It’s easy to debate that who  is behind the attacks and so on and so forth but even if we find out what are we going to do about it? Are we going to react? Are we going to teach those people a lesson? It’s easy to say lets learn from America. What are we going to learn? Do we have the balls to do what America did? Or are we a bunch of cowards who hide behind the pretext of a peace loving nation? Being peace loving is good but when someone comes and rapes you, you just don’t lie down and enjoy. We are at a stage where on being raped as we cannot react, so we are enjoying it. Why? I don’t doubt the capabilities of my country’s army. The only people I doubt are those who we have elected to run this country a bunch of incompetent people who don’t know there fronts from their backs.

Come on guys Pakistan is shouting loud and clear that they really want to help us. So let the leaders take this opportunity and attack POK and destroy those terrorist who sit there as a future threat to man kind. Let’s do the same thing what America did in Afghanistan after 9/11. We need to make a statement to those people that we are not going to lie back enjoy this rape.

One can go on but I guess its time to act than just talk. Let’s not give each other ball talks lets just have the balls to act and show them what we mean. I know our security forces and commandos have it them. I just want to thank all those army officers and police men and marco’s who helped us get through this. And one thing to the politicians — if you guys can’t be of any help then keep your trap shut and not add to the already fueled sense of irritation and anger. At least show some sensibility now. Giving resignation only reflects on your incapacities’ on a badly performed job. Own up and do something about it. Touring the places will not help or change anything.

I am so ashamed to say that it took so much destruction and so many lives for us to realize what we should have years back.

SHOUT OUT LOUD!

Think… analyse… act…

(The way I thought after the 26/11 attack)

What does it take to create the biggest attack on our prestige, the deepest wound in our system and the longest running anti-terror mission in India? A well-laid plan…

26th Nov. 08’ a night that changed the entire facade of terrorist being thought as the most illogical and brainwashed people on planet earth, to one of utter fear and astonishment. As the world watched and a handful of young gentlemen after having their share of the night’s amusement blindly shot that they wished wanted dead. Like devils prowling their way hunting down innocent pray.

Bodies flying, bullets gushing through and blood splattered all over the place. A typical Hollywood terror attack, a movie scene, a surreal feeling of “Is this actually happening?”

Commotion filled aroma of gunpowder, mixed with the deafening sound of airwaves that hit you deep inside. A fear that surmounted that of anything ever feared off. This was the fear of death.

They walked casually in and sat like they had come here every other day. Paid their bills, and rampantly did what they came here to do. It seemed so simple, how did they do it with no one to stop them in their tracks, summoned their intentions and locked out their emotions. They knew they were walking on the path of destruction, madness and pure glorification. Mission accomplished!

50 plus hours and they were still spreading the same list of emotions that have a black list in our systems. Why was it taking so long? Why did so many die? Why was it happening to us? Why us again? A score of questions amass our minds.

Is it that these terrorists are getting better at it or we don’t even know how far they have made it? I believe its us who have not gone anywhere. We are a waiting bunch of idiots (centre and state combined) who have presumed the role of a sitting duck. Waiting to be hit again, again and again. Are we waiting for them to become passive to us? Are we thinking if we don’t do anything they might just get bored of us? I have a grin of disgust…

So whose fault is it? Who made the mistake? They government did? No. The one whose made the mistake is reading this right now. Until we clear the root of all problems, it can’t be cleared from the top. How many times have we broken the law? Everyday we walk when the light says no to walking. Every other day you break a rule and easily say its ok let me handle it! We ourselves have lost our own integrity. It’s just a matter of Rs.50, isn’t it?

Where is the faith in law? How many times do we see a policeman and shiver with utter respect for the law? Ask yourself, if you were to sketch an Indian policeman, what would it look like? Let me give you a hint. A dark, heavy faced, grumpy looking, big moustached, over grown tummy, a single stick in his hand with khaki on him. Did that make any sense? It’s not difficult to disagree. This is the level of our saviours. Who is going to save them when everyone is in danger? Half of them haven’t had a bullet shot out of their miserly pistols and we expect them to combat against Avtomat Kalashnikova a.k.a AK 47. They stand no chance.

As hundreds of people died our very own elected Prime Minister gave a speech to the country. It looked like an uninspired song. A mere thought that just popped out the very moment. Still it was so stale, the foul smell could be smelt through the tv screen. What was expected was a tremour of earth shattering words that ould have inspired a one legged to jump out of his house in wake of national retaliation and civilian safety.

Where were the names that had spoke all about “We are marathi’s. We are the children of warriors!”. No one knew where they even were. Were was the feeling to togetherness as those who didn’t deserve to were dying every hour.

Like a waiter standing with his writing pad and a pen, the NSG awaited “Orders”. As if it didn’t seem like it was a situation they were specially trained and summoned for. They waited for miniscule things to get cleared. By the time it eventually happened, the death toll reached tripple figures.

“If it were on the NSG, the operation whould be over in an hour” NSG Commander. I do not need to argue further.

It’s upto the people who have studied how to govern, to govern, and to govern in the right way. I not talking about history sheeters turned politicians, I am talking about who know not just the right way but, those who are trained to be in the lead. We needed trained men to get rid of the scum in Taj, Oberoi and Trident. Don’t you think we need trained professionals to run our country?

I moan for everyone who gave their life for our safety, its not their fault that they were ill facilitated, that the currupt politicians gobbled up their money for one’s own security, but for its our fault that we never noticed them, never thought about their need when the judgement day whould arrive.

All we can do is criticise them, look inside fellows, the first step belongs to us.

Change is what we want, so changed we shal get. Not change they shall be.

The tide has just started to go back, are we going to sit and wait for the tide to come back and get us again or are we going to make drastic measures to safeguard us?

Common Man? Who?? - Vinay Pawaskar, Mumbai

SHOUT OUT LOUD!

Film stars do it. Sportsmen do it. Police do it. The judiciary system does it. Politicians have been doing it as if it is their birthright. We all do it. And now even terrorists have started doing it…ignoring the common man!

Can’t really blame them, can we? No one gives a damn about the common man. Not even the common man himself! The terrorist (akin to some FMCG company salesmen) were given a target of 5k casualties. All they had to do was land up at dadar and/or andheri station. Only one group had the brains to visit VT (CST doesn’t stick…deport me if you must) and let rip. But the others preferred Taj and Hilton. Born and brought up in the suburbs I wouldn’t include Leopold in the category of places the common man visits more often. So the common man was not on their priority list or hit list.

I don’t know whether to applaud this or fret in despair. I mean terrorist attacks were the one source for us to hog the limelight. Check out news channels. If Amitabh Bachchan decided to dye his french beard it would be breaking news. We would know – Which brand dye he used? Who dyed his beard? At what time did he dye it? Did he consult an astrologer for a mahurat? What is the CMYK combination of the colour used? What kind of brush was used on his beard? Was it made of camel hair or synthetic plastic? And so on and so forth. If however a certain Ramdas Pandurang Shirodkar, (I used a made-up name…but for all we know such a man might have actually died…we will never know because no one will care to report it) the sole earning member of his family fell off the ‘packed-like-even-sardines-haven’t-been-packed-before’ virar local and died, the media or political parties won’t be out brandishing their knives asking for enquiries and resignations.

But terrorist attacks, however briefly, helped force media and political attention towards the common man. Had the hypothetical Ramdas died in a bomb blast, his family would at least receive (or could have hoped to receive) a lakh or so in compensation. By falling off the train he didn’t even get his family a monthly second class pass from Virar to Churchgate! A blast in a chawl or market would force the local MLA to visit his constituency before the elections set in. We had the window of opportunity then to yell out our problems while he strolled through the blast area nodding sagely to what the police chief was whispering into his ear about his promotion and transfer to a better area! When the media correspondents appeared and started mouthing about the inhumanity of the blast with the blast affected area and its denizens as a backdrop, we could make huge placards (wonder how no one ever did it till date) about our problems and telecast our real grievances – the packed trains, faulty water supply, poor infrastructure, corruption, bureaucratic red tape, pollution, health standards, onion prices…I could go on…

We had hope as long as terrorist groups didn’t realize that the common man’s irrelevance in the scheme of things had given him resilience to any kind of atrocity. But it seems the terrorist groups have woken up to this fact! With us the show will always go on and everyone, including us, gives a damn about what happens. So we can sigh in relief and return to the grind that is everyday life. RIP Ramdas!

Wake up, please! - Omkar Gogate, Thane

SHOUT OUT LOUD!

NO MERCIES to terrorists, yes! But NO MORE MERCIES to the POLITICIANS, definitely no mercies!

Such tremendous lack of concern for your own nation, to your own state, and your beloved Gem the City of Mumbai. We knew there was corruption, there was bribery, there was lethargy, indifference, disconcern, all all!  But this was the BAAP of ALL of it, when the intimations from our able agencies were over looked. Why? Were we SUPPOSED TO GET USED TO IT? What the hell is going on? The marine territory of India is as much sovereign as is Land territory.

Don't tell me we never knew the hell can fall from the sea. Experts have always expressed concern over close proximity of Karachi with Mumbai. Mumbai the main naval base of India was attacked from Sea. They came, they captured and they destroyed our Taj! Politicians took a nice tour of the point zeroes. Then they made either plain or stupid comments. Now they have resigned. What else did they receive in gift? No trial, no investigation, no punishment, how?

How conveniently our jurisdiction is framed, so that our darling politicos can rest assured for life that they needn't worry of their lethal mistakes. Obviously then the next BUNCH of MINISTERS don't have to worry too. They just have to carry on the same legacy.

Let's get together to fight this terrorism at home. Take part in election, be more sensitive to issues. Wake yourself up...... please!

SHOUT OUT LOUD!

We are running in circle. We expect from govenrment and government expects from us, and its never gonna end.

Stop expecting and work independantly without expecting from government.Let's not waste time in finding out who is responsible for what.

Think it this way..a thief breaks into your house one night...are you going to wait and watch what your father and mother gonna do? Does it realy matter to blame your uncle for keeping the door open??

You ask questions, u talk around with ur friends abt all that happened..you blame media,government,polititians..the point is DOES IT MATTER? I mean what matters is what are YOU going to do to save you and your family. No the government is not capable to save us. It all starts from us and ends on us.

SHOUT OUT LOUD!

How many times do you sleep at night feeling dismayed and wake up with the same feeling only a little stronger? How many times in a city like Mumbai you call up your son every one hour just to hear his voice again? How many times do you see more than a 100 people covered in blood and bullets and you shed more than a tear for them even when your loved ones are all hail and hearty? And how many times you feel so vulnerable that you sleep with a pistol under your pillow only because the government out there gives a damn (read rat’s ass) about your life?

The 26/11 catastrophe made us acquainted with what’s being called as the 21st century terrorism. It gave us a glimpse of the extent to which our lives are in danger. But what it did most was that it made us aware of the non-proficiency of our diplomats and bureaucrats. It made us realize how we failed as a nation to protect our integrity, our glory and our stand on being a gracious country.

As a Mumbaikar I feel numb and that is just one of the many strong emotions that I am going through at this point in time. Loss of life, loss of property, loss of economy, loss of cultural spirit, loss of faith, loss of trust and an extreme loss of my own consciousness - my 20 something eyes have seen this magnificent city take a huge blow in the nuts.

But better late than never, I will voice myself as much as possible. I want this city to be throbbing with enthusiasm coupled with maturity. I want to start believing in it and its ability to sustain anything and everything that attempts to break it. And I know I speak for everyone when I say that I want to contribute in any way that I am asked to for making this place an inspiration for its vision and its vigour.

SHOUT OUT LOUD!

The innocents always die first. Or do the unprepared always die first?

Complacency and ignorance have their own benefits, especially in the form of bliss, but as Mumbaikars, were we too indifferent and caught up in our own lives to see what could happen to us if we did not pay attention to our own safety?

It is easy to point fingers at others, especially politicians and the security forces. It is easy to demand resignations (how does that help, I have no clue) and make resolutions after attacks like we make every New Year, only to find them broken. What is not easy to do is look at ourselves and see what we can do.

Of course, with our busy lives all this is not really possible. Just ask your boss or teacher whether they will give you enough time to really do something for the city.

Is there really hope in such a scenario where we can’t practically do anything?

Do you have anything to say?

At times like these, we have a lot to say.

Say whatever is on your minds, whether it is the politics and politicians, security and our liberties, our police and army, helplessness of us as common citizens or the indifference to everything that will follow once our media is over this new toy they have got.

SHOUT OUT LOUD!

What is happening and why.

The 2611 Opinion

Whenever something terrible happens to us, we as the common people of the country have no place to have our say. TV and print media is utterly unaccesible and we know no other way of getting ourselves heard. But in a democracy, it is very important that the people are heard, that each and everyone of us is heard.

On the 3rd of December, 2008, let us all have our say on what we feel about the terrorist attack that happened on the 26th of November, 2008 in south Mumbai. A few of us have gotten together and made a few comics which talk about the situation we have on our hands. These comics take a humorous look at the grim things we have to face, of course, in a non frivolous way.

Do come and have a look at these comics, placed at exactly the places where these things took place - the Marine drive, the Gateway of India and Metro Cinema from 8 am in the morning to 7 pm at night.

We also have a message board for you to write a message to our politicians, our security forces, our police force or just for us, the common people.

Do spread the word around and let others know. Come and have your say which will be featured on a blog for itself. Later we will also have discussions on the opinion of the people, that is us.

Nothing is more important in a democracy than what you and I think. Come have your say for it is not important that the 'outsiders' hear us, but that our own people know what we expect from them and to thank those who put their lives on the line for our safety on a daily basis.

Who we are - We are nobody important. Just a bunch of 20 somethings with something to say. We will be standing at the places mentioned above. In case you want our names, we are Akshay, Anish, Gaurav, Pranav and Priyanshi.

The 3rd of December

We saw a father lose his son… a husband lose his wife, someone lose a friend while someone else lose them all. But what we all lost over those two days was Faith,

Incidences like 26/11 leave behind them agony, disgust, hatred and an intense feeling of helplessness. We want to contribute in some way or at least want ourselves to be heard on a platform which is competent enough to make a difference – going on a peace march or by lighting a candle, putting up blogs or sending messages on news channels or in any other way that makes our voice heard. The bottomline is - we all want to stand up against it.

This coming Wednesday, the 3rd of December, come witness what we think and let us know what youthink at the Marine Drive , the Gateway and the Metro.

There is nothing more important in any democracy than expression.

Priyanshi Saksena
